Urban Art Gallery

Urban Art Gallery

Public Art in its many forms not only adds to the beauty of a space, but contributes to the overall vibrancy of a city.  The Winnipeg Urban Art Gallery seeks to continue the beautification of downtown Winnipeg by adding art to the façade of 295 Portage Avenue.  Artwork from poets, writers, illustrators, photographers, graphic artists, architects, painters, sketchers, designers etc. can be submitted to the Downtown BIZ and Gendis Inc.  A panel of judges will select up to 8 pieces of art to showcase for a year.  This year’s theme is Love, and each year a new theme will be announced in order to keep things fresh.

The Urban Art Gallery “presents a perfect opportunity to create a visual gallery to enhance the quality of life and increase community interaction in downtown Winnipeg.  Art has the ability to bring communities together, build a common experience, promote communication and improve the visual landscape of the city black.  By making the initiative a contest it enables the direct involvement of the community to express their thought and ideas based on the suggested theme.”  The location of Portage Ave is important not only because it is the heart of our great city, but also an important stretch of the Trans Canada Hwy.  As visitors travel through Winnipeg, we want them to see a re-energized and vibrant downtown.

While the submission deadline for this year has passed, continue to check out http://downtownwinnipegbiz.com/urban-art-gallery/ for more information.  Keep a look out on the north side of Portage in the Dollarama Store Window to see who this year’s winners were.
